I'm getting a kitty on Saturday!!!!!

Like I said...I'm getting a kitty on Saturday!!!  My mom found her a couple years ago, but they can't have kitties indoors and this cat really wants to live in the house.  Now that I have a house, I'm going to make her dreams come true!  I'm so excited.  This week, I went out and got a litter box, litter, food, and a scratching post.  It's so weird, I never liked cats at all until my friend took in a stray a couple years ago.  Now, I can't wait to cuddle with her!  She's very sweet and loves people.  I really hope she will get along well with Cams' kitties when they meet in the near future...

Potato Soup

Add to: Recipe Box | |</span> frosthazard, 01/07/10

Potato Soup

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    8 medium whole russett potatoes
approx. 5 cups unsweetened soy milk
    2 cloves garlic, chopped
    pinch of fresh oregano
    1 tsp ground black pepper
    salt to taste
2 tbsp smart balance or other vegan butter
    1 tbsp paprika
    1 cup water

Directions:

It's very important to make this recipe with UNSWEETENED soy milk. The normal kind has too much sugar and will not taste right.

Wash and peel potatoes. Leave some skin on them if you like pieces of it in your soup. Cut them into varying sizes from 1" x 1" to about 2" x 2" (you want some of them to break up while cooking, but ...

Favorite Vegan Lotion???

It is that Time of year again, and My hands are always Tore up from the Floor up.
I have used Kiss my Face, Jason, and now onto Alba.
Jason was my favorite, but lately they smell bad- I think they switched up the Formula or something.

So I am using Alba Botanical Fragrance Free...It is not doing so good at the Moment, but need to give it more time.

Your Personal Favorites???

What can I do with brownie crumbs? My gluten-free brownie bites didn't solidfy.

I forgot to add an important ingredient to my gluten-free brownie bites--xanthan gum. As a result they didn't solidify.

They taste great, rich and chocolatey, but what does one do with brownie bites crumbs besides eat them with a spoon?

Homebrew?

So my wife, knowing me as well as she does, has ensured my brain will be preoccupied for months and months on end... for Christmas, she got a a homebrew set up.

And I love it.

I've not tasted a sip of homebrewed beer yet, but I love it. The smell of the grains, adding the hops, cooling the wort... It's a blast. I'm all ready planning more exotic brews and can't wait to taste my first batch (an Amber Ale).

Anybody else do the homebrew thang? Tips? Suggestions?

BEER!

In search of toothache-friendly meals

I've recently undergone a root canal, and my tooth is so sensitive that for the next couple days I'm on a liquid diet.

Any specific soup/ect. recipes you would reccomend that literally require no chewing? Or perhaps some full-meal smoothies?

Thank you!

New from Holland (American in Holland)

I'm new on this site, new to being a vegan, and otherwise happy to be here with like-minded individuals. Being a vegan in Holland could be likened to being a virgin in a whorehouse Tongue

I'm from the southeast USA originally and planning to move back later this year for my job to San Antonio, Texas. I can't wait to introduce myself to people - "Hi, I'm a liberal Democrat vegan, this is my European Socialist husband, and our two kids." 2Funny All kidding aside, I know there are great people everywhere and we're looking forward to the yummy Tex-Mex food & warmer weather!

I was a vegetarian from age 14 until I was 30 and then got Celiac disease (inability to digest gluten) which led my doctor to tell me that I should eat meat. DUH! I should have never listened!! Anyway, years later and health declining, I came across Eat to Live last year and then Skinny B which has led me to a vegan path  Smitten.

Looking forward to meeting people, getting some yummy recipes, and otherwise hanging out  flower2

Michael Pollan on The Daily Show

Good interview -- not strictly about vegan stuff, but about a lot of food issues that most here consider important: 'false cheapness' of subsidized animal foods, impact of industrial farming on health & environment, etc. It's at  http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-4-2010/michael-pollan, if you didn't catch it... very cool!

Cheap Tofu

Some people may not know this or may not have an Asian/Oriental food market in their area but these places usually have good tofu for cheap. You may have to ask for it and it is usually not packaged just placed in a plastic bag with some water. I get 3 standard size blocks for 1 dollar at my store. Definitely check it out or let me know what you get at your oriental Thumbs Up market

Ethiopian Food

Hey everyone, I am writing to plug a really good Ethiopian restaurant in Harrisonburg,VA called the Blue Nile(2 hours south of DC). They have about 16 vegan items including appetizers, entrees, and soups. The restaurant is beautiful and they also have a lot of live music from local and touring groups downstairs in their bar. Blue nile even has a tofu wat dish. (very rare for ethio. restaurants.

Anyways.... I was wondering what some of your favorite Ethiopian foods/experiences are???
>   For anyone who hasn't been to an Ethiopian restaurant it is awesome for vegans!!!!! and  you eat with your hands
My favorites are misir wat, shiro wat, gomen, and enguday wat
